Lambakan buah durian tidak dieksport kerana langgar piawaian

SUNGAI PETANI - Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan (FAMA) sentiasa memastikan semua buah-buahan tempatan khususnya durian, mematuhi piawaian ditetapkan, sebelum dieksport ke pasaran luar negara.

- Bernama

Cozy Corner, Ampang Park

Honda Malaysia recalls 49k units of Accord and Odyssey

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Malaysia has issued a product recall for 49,116 units of the Odyssey (2014-2017 model) and Accord (2013-2016 model) for faults in the makes involving battery sensor failure and a defective door mirror component.

Honda said 20,233 units of the Accord are being recalled due to inaccurate forming on the printed circuit board in the battery sensor during its production process.

"This may cause electrical short circuit of the sensor, and possibilities of smoke coming from the hood or, in the worst case, a fire," it said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Meanwhile, 27,912 units of Accord and 971 units of Odyssey are being recalled for a defective door mirror component.

"The defective door mirror component is due to inconsistent surface treatment of the movable contact area inside the door mirror retracting switch, which may cause the affected door mirror to retract during driving or parking."

Honda said it has sufficient stocks for current replacement requirements for both the battery sensor and defective door mirror component, and requests affected customers to make an appointment with an authorised dealer.

All affected customers will be informed via notification letters, which will include details of the product recall. Any charges related to the product recall will be borne by Honda Malaysia.

"Honda Malaysia strongly encourages all affected customers to replace the defective battery sensor as it may become a fire hazard, and the door mirror component for a safer drive."

Honda customers can check their vehicle recall status either by logging on to www.honda.com.my or www.productrecall.honda.com.my or by calling the Honda Toll Free number 1-800-88-2020.

Rio Ferdinand tweet sparks Southeast Asian food fight

JAKARTA: Former England footballer Rio Ferdinand has unwittingly sparked a cross-border food fight after suggesting that a rice dish was Singaporean, to the horror of Indonesians who claim it as their own.
Ferdinand made the food faux pas during a weekend trip to watch the Singapore Grand Prix, when he tweeted a picture of himself holding a plate of the dish next to the comment: “Nasi goreng lunch.. Keeping it local in #Singapore”.

“Nasi goreng”, which literally translates as “fried rice” in Indonesian, generally consists of rice mixed with a sweet sauce and other ingredients such as chilli, vegetables and chicken, and often topped with a fried egg.
But the suggestion that the dish was not Indonesian caused horror in the archipelago, which is one of Singapore’s neighbours, and sparked a flood of angry tweets.
“M8, its Indonesian food, actually. There’s no ‘nasi’ and ‘goreng’ in Singapore,” Agung Prasetyo tweeted at Ferdinand, while others invited the former Manchester United player to their homes to try a dish of real, Indonesian nasi goreng.
This angry reaction was met with irritation in neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia, with netizens claiming that fried rice is found in many countries in the region, not solely Indonesia.
There was particular annoyance in Singapore, with some suggesting that Indonesians’ defiant defence of a rice dish was a stark contrast to its refusal to accept the blame for forest fires on its territory that blanket the city-state with haze every year.
“Ohhhh nasi goreng can claim but haze cannot,” said Twitter user @HarisBRosli.
On Monday, Ferdinand attempted to calm the bickering unleashed by his remark, commenting on Twitter: “Was there really uproar with my Nasi goreng tweet??!! Relax guys...’local’ in SE Asia”.

JAKARTA: A college student in Jakarta, Indonesia, is under police custody after killing his professor on May 2, over a squabble with his thesis.
A report by Kompas said faculty members and students of the North Sumatra Muhammadiyah University (UMSU), were startled upon hearing the screams of their 57-year-old lecturer, Dr. Hj Noreen Lubis, inside Building B of the campus.
University officials told authorities that the student, identified as Rormardo Sah Siregar, 21, was seen earlier having a conversation with his teacher about his thesis.
The discussion soon turned into a heated argument, prompting Lubis to storm out of the classroom and head for the bathroom.

Apparently peeved and angry, Siregar waited for Lubis outside the door and slashed her neck with a knife as she was about to come out, the report said.

50 stranded in Langkawi after ferry tickets sell out

LANGKAWI: About 50 Malaysian and foreign tourists were stranded when ferry tickets back to the mainland were sold out on Saturday.
Many of them would have had to spend the night along the five-foot ways of the closed Jetty Point Complex if not for a group of Good Samaritans who arrived at 11pm and offered them hotel rooms.
Kuah assemblyman Nor Saidi Nanyan, who organised the aid, said ferry tickets to Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis on the mainland were sold out since 10am on Saturday.
“I think nearly a thousand tourists were caught off-guard. These 50 were stuck at the ferry complex as they had checked out of their hotels and handed in their rented cars.
“They bought ferry tickets for the next day and remained at the Jetty Point Complex,” he said.
Nor Saidi called several hotel managers and they were gracious enough to provide free rooms.
“We gave priority to children and senior citizens. We also provided meals,” he said, adding that suitable places for all the stranded tourists were arranged by 2am yesterday.

Secret Recipe: Halal Issue?

PETALING JAYA: Restaurant chain Secret Recipe’s halal certificate has been revoked, the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) confirmed.

The department, however, clarified that the withdrawal was not due to “haram ingredients” but over issues of cleanliness.

It added that the certificate had been revoked on May 7.

“We had to revoke the halal certificate because there has been a violation to the Malaysia Halal Certification Procedures Manual that involves serious cleanliness issues.

“The revocation, however, has nothing to do with haram ingredients in the processing of products,” said Jakim’s Halal Hub director Hakimah Mohd Yusoff.

She said Jakim had summoned the company over the offences.

“They h.ave promised to take immediate action on this matter,” she said, adding that the company could apply for a halal certificate once the requirements are met.

“Jakim will reassess their application according to Malaysia Standard 1500:2009 and the Malaysia Halal Certification Procedures Manual,” she said.

Social media was abuzz since Monday when a screengrab of Jakim’s confirmation on Twitter that Secret Recipe’s halal certificate had been revoked went viral.

For more information, consumers are advised to call Jakim’s Halal Hub at 03-88925000/5001 and 03-88925048 (Public Relations Officer) or refer to our Halal Malaysia Directory at www.halal.gov.my

LARUT 19 Mac – Pendakwah terkenal, Datuk Mohd.

Jadi saya kecewa.

Najmuddin Elias.

Minggu lalu, Mufti Perak, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria menegur Mohd.

Terdahulu, Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd. Kadir secara peribadi meminta Mohd. Kazim agar tidak berhenti daripada berceramah.

Zambry dalam sidang akhbar selepas mempengerusikan mesyuarat mingguan exco kerajaan negeri berkata, sumbangan Mohd. Kazim masih diperlukan kerana kaedah dakwah yang disampaikannya menarik minat pelbagai lapisan usia dan kaum.

“Saya berharap isu melibatkan Mohd.

Fares increased for taxi, train and express bus services

KUALA LUMPUR: Be prepared to pay more for your public transport. The increase in taxi fares takes immediate effect while train and express bus charges will be raised on May 1 and May 15 respectively.

Budget taxis in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru will charge 25 sen per 200m and 25 sen per 36 seconds although the flagfall will remain at RM3 for the first kilometre.

This is a sizable increase as each budget taxi will get RM1.25 per km (from RM0.87 per km, up by 44%) and 42.67 sen per minute (from 28 sen per minute, up by 49%).

For example, a budget taxi that is stuck in traffic for an hour will take in RM25 (RM30 for those in Penang) from time-based charges alone, up from RM16.80 previously. This is likely to make taxi drivers more willing to face congestions.

Express buses will charge 2.1 sen more (or 22.5%) per km, setting the new fare at 11.4 sen per km.

Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said taxi and express bus operators were facing rising costs, adding that the last fare review for both was in 2009.

“We took into account the needs of the operators and the public (in coming up with these new fares),” he told reporters at SPAD headquarters here.

Teksi 1Malaysia (TEKS1M) cabs – consisting exclusively of the brown Proton Exora – are the only taxis to have the flagfall rate raised from RM3 to RM4.

The hike in taxi fares does not cover airport limos and executive taxis (typically blue in colour), and is limited to Peninsular Malaysia.

According to SPAD, taxi fares would be reviewed each year based on operating cost changes.

Although the increase in fares took immediate effect, taxis could only charge the new rates after the meter had been recalibrated.

SPAD chief executive Mohd Nur Ismal Mohd Kamal said it would take one to two months for all taxis to use this new setting.

“There’s a panel of service providers they can go to. We have asked them to increase (operating) capacitym,” he said.

SPAD said that senior citizens, the disabled and children below 12 years old would continue to enjoy the 25% discount on express bus fares.

On train fares, Syed Hamid said SPAD had given its approval to KTM Bhd and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to set new rates covering LRT, KTM Komuter, KTM Intercity and KL Monorail.

According to SPAD, the Ampang and Kelana Jaya LRT Line fares have not been reviewed for the past 19 and 17 years respectively. Monorail, KTM Komuter and KTM Intercity fares have remained the same for 12, 12 and 25 years respectively.

Mohd Nur said the fares of stage buses would not be increased now or in the near future.

“This is because low-income earners rely on stage buses for transport, and they cannot afford to pay more,” he said.

He added that the Government would cover stage bus costs.

Line Clear cleared out by council

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) raided the island’s popular Line Clear nasi kandar outlet, which has been embroiled in an ownership tussle since last year.

Enforcement officers seized and carted away tables and chairs during the 4am operation yesterday.

However, outlet operator Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir, 60, stayed defiant and continued the business with the remaining tables and chairs.

“The high-handed action of the council is uncalled for as we are still negotiating who should operate the restaurant. MPPP has no right to determine who runs it,” he said.

Abdul Hamid described the council’s action as “totally inconsiderate” and said no prior notice was given.

“Only a few workers were present and although one of them pleaded for time to contact me, the officers went ahead and loaded the tables and chairs onto a truck.”

About 40 enforcement officers from the MPPP Licensing and Public Health Department were involved in the operation off Penang Road.

In a statement issued later, the council said the restaurant was not allowed to continue its business as the current operators did not have a licence for this year.

Warga asing kuasai bisnes rakyat Malaysia

Abbott: Sydney cafe gunman mentally unstable

SYDNEY: An Iranian-born gunman who took hostages in a Sydney cafe was infatuated with extremism and mentally unstable, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Tuesday, calling the siege a “brush with terrorism”.

“He had a long history of violent crime, infatuation with extremism and mental instability,” Abbott said. “As the siege unfolded ... he sought to cloak his actions with the symbolism of the ISIL death cult.”

The 50-year-old, widely named in the media as Man Haron Monis, took 17 people hostage at the Lindt cafe in central Sydney on Monday.

He was killed when police in SWAT-style gear stormed the eatery early Tuesday. Two hostages also died.

Abbott said he was well known to Australian authorities.

“We know that he sent offensive letters to the families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan and was found guilty of offences related to this,” he said.

“We also know that he posted graphic extremist material online. Tragically, there are people in our community ready to engage in politically motivated violence.”

Abbott praised police for the way they acted, saying Australians “should be reassured by the way our law enforcement and security agencies responded to this brush with terrorism”.

“Plainly, there are lessons to be learned and we will thoroughly examine this incident to decide what lessons can be learned,” he said, adding that “it will take time to clarify exactly what happened in Martin Place and why”. – AFP
