Utilise your lippy
The right shade of lipstick can create the illusion of much whiter teeth. Either blue based lipstick or a purple coloured gloss will maximise the whiteness of your smile. Plus purple lips are bang on trend this season.
Don’t forget to floss
The base of the tooth is usually the most yellow, so if you’re removing plaque from around the gum with dental floss, it automatically gives the appearance of whiter teeth.
Use a straw
Chromogenic and pigmented liquids (like black tea or cranberry juice) tend to seep into tooth enamel and therefore discolour your teeth. Drinking through a straw helps avoid this, so ask for one when you can.
Get the right tools
Electric toothbrushes are the best bet for removing extrinsic stains, which are embedded on the exterior of the tooth surface. Use with a whitening toothpaste like White Glo for maximum results.
Brush up on your knowledge
Yeah, you might be brushing your teeth for long enough (that’s two minutes, FYI), but are you doing it the right way? Brushing too hard can actually count towards discolouring as it wears away the enamel. The best method is to place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently move it in a circular motion, rather than back-and-forth. And grip the toothbrush like a pencil so you won’t scrub too hard.
Professional cleaning
Dentists recommend that you book in for a professional clean twice a year. Yeah, it’s an effort, but it helps buff away tartar, bacterial deposits and external stains. So it’s worth it.
Professional whitening
Voucher sites like Groupon and Scoopon offer deals of up to 80% off professional teeth whitening, but we’d advise you try all the non-chemical options first. Not everyone’s teeth are suitable for the treatment; if your teeth and gums aren’t healthy enough in the first place then it can cause more harm than good. So do your research and speak to a dentist before investing.
